This is general information for families comparing settings in New Jersey. It is not medical advice, not legal advice, and not a recommendation of any community.
New Jersey does not license independent living
Independent living is housing for older adults who do not need a licensed care package built into the rent. Meals, activities, or housekeeping may be part of the building. New Jersey does not license that setting, and it is not in the Department of Health long-term care file.
This site lists a community only when a public record lets us verify it. There is no independent-living license roster to import, so those communities are not in the directory. Assisted living is licensed, and those licensed communities are the ones listed.
How to tell which one fits
Independent living is the closer description when the person does not need daily help as part of the lease. Assisted living is housing plus help with tasks such as bathing, dressing, or medications, under a New Jersey license. An Assisted Living Residence, a Comprehensive Personal Care Home, and an Assisted Living Program are different licenses. The name on each listing is the one the state published.
Licensed options are in the assisted living directory. Use it to read the license type, the town, and the licensed capacity. It does not say who should move, and it does not rank buildings.
This page cannot decide which setting a particular person needs. Ask the person, the family, and a clinician who knows them. Ask each community what help is included and what happens if care needs increase.
How to find and compare options
- For assisted living, start with the licensed directory and filter by county or town.
- Open two or three listings and compare the license type and the facts that are filled in. An empty cell means the public file did not say.
- For independent living, there is no state license list on this site. Ask each community what is included, visit more than one, and compare what they put in writing.
- The Next Right Step is free for families. No facility, agency, or provider pays to be listed, ranked, or recommended, and we don't receive referral fees. If we ever accept a sponsor, that listing will be clearly labeled “Sponsored,” and this note will be updated.
Continuing care and life-plan campuses
Some campuses put independent living and licensed care on one property. Families often call these continuing care retirement communities or life-plan communities. The independent-living part is still not a Department of Health license. A nursing home or assisted living on the same campus appears in this directory only when a public license or CMS record verifies that part.
The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs describes its continuing care retirement community program on its own page. This guide links there and does not interpret the law or say whether any campus is registered.

Questions families ask
Does New Jersey license independent living?
No. Independent living is not in the Department of Health long-term care license file, so this directory does not publish an independent-living roster.
Does this page recommend a community?
No. It describes the difference between the settings and where to read a public record. It does not rank or endorse any facility.
